Overview

Mahtomedi Boys Youth Lacrosse is governed by both a national body, USA Lacrosse, and a state body, Homegrown Lacrosse.

The follow equipment is required to play boys youth lacrosse:

Lacrosse Stick
At the 8U level, there are no league regulations regarding stick length or depth of pocket. Standard boy's sticks are allowed, however, MLA recommends that your 8U player uses a 'junior' stick, or cuts their stick down in length for easier use. Ideally, the stick should be about the length of your player's arm when held straight out from their shoulder.
For the stick pocket, if you hold the stick parallel to the floor, you should be able to see the top of the ball above the stick head (sidewall).
Mouth Guard (color cannot be white)
Helmet
Gloves
Elbow Pads
Chest Pad - must be NOCSAE certified

Age Division Summary for 2026 (for play between Sept 1, 2025 - Aug 31, 2026):

Participation is commonly determined by age or birthdate ranges historically aligned with East Coast school systems. In recognition of regional academic structures, the Great Northern Lacrosse League (GNLL) encourages Minnesota associations to adopt a “play with your grade” model. Accordingly, the Mahtomedi Lacrosse Association (MLA) acknowledges that a player’s age may, in certain circumstances, fall outside the standard age range for their current academic grade. In such instances, MLA, consistent with GNLL guidance, may allow a player to participate at the grade level in which they are currently enrolled.

Players participating under this provision who fall outside the standard age range are required to execute a Participation Waiver acknowledging and accepting this exception. Please contact your youth director to obtain a waiver.

This policy is established to promote continuity among long-term peer groups, strengthen community connections, and foster optimal team cohesion and player development by allowing athletes to compete alongside their established classmates.
